Premiere of the Virunga XCO MTB Series – a milestone for the sport of mountain biking in Rwanda

What began as an idea has now become a reality: the Virunga XCO MTB Series has been launched - a new mountain bike race series that will take place three times a year in Rwanda. The initiator of this series is none other than Florent from the TLCA (Twin Lake Cycling Academy), together with Blaise from the ARCC (African Rising Cycling Center). Two real movers and shakers who have used their experience of recent years - including at the Rwandan Epic - to put together an event that will take the Rwandan MTB sport a big step forward.

The idea behind the series is to promote young talent in Rwanda, strengthen sports structures and provide a stage for talented mountain bikers. The region around the Virunga volcanoes offers the perfect backdrop with its spectacular nature – and at the same time a challenging terrain that challenges both beginners and experienced riders.

Teamwork at all levels

Florent and Blaise were convinced right from the start: “If we give young people the opportunity to develop in sport, then we are moving more than just bicycles. And that is exactly what happened at the first race in the series. With the support of the Rwandan Cycling Federation (FERWACY) and many motivated volunteers, the race became a true celebration of cycling.

Judges, photographers, motorcycle escorts, marshals, technical teams and many volunteers – they all ensured that the day ran smoothly and professionally. The atmosphere was full of energy, excitement and emotion. Kids cheered on their siblings, parents stood proudly at the side of the track – and everyone who happened to pass by in the village or on the way stopped curiously to see what was happening on two wheels.

Diversity on the route

The field of participants was a colorful mix: from young talents to ambitious hobby riders to aspiring athletes – everyone was welcome. This shows how inclusive and accessible the sport of MTB has become in Rwanda. And right in the middle of it all: our Shift Up team.

A special victory for Banzi – and for all of us

We are particularly proud of Banzi, who not only took part in the race, but also won it. A moment full of emotion that shows how much passion and hard work he puts into his training – and how much potential he has.

„Without Florent and his support, I would never have got this far. This race was for me – and for him.“
Banzi, winner of the first Virunga XCO

For Banzi, this is not just a victory, it is proof that it is worth supporting dreams and visions. Two years ago he got a SUFR bike and we are excited to see what else we can achieve in our journey together.

„When I saw Banzi cross the finish line first, I was speechless – it was a moment I will never forget.“

Our support – a small contribution with a big impact

We at Shift Up for Rwanda e.V. are proud to have been able to support the series financially. Our vision is to create new perspectives through sport – and that is exactly what has happened here.

The Virunga XCO MTB Series is still in its infancy. But it is an example of what is possible when ideas meet passion, when knowledge is shared and when young people are given room to grow.

We are already looking forward to the upcoming races – and to telling many more success stories like Banzi’s.

Ride on, Rwanda. The journey has only just begun.
